Calvin,

The recipe we are using is 18gms of beans, 300ml or gms of water and 4 mins for drip or steeping. For the Clever dripper its 2:50 - 3:00 for steeping and a drawdown of around 1:30. So, you have to find your grind size to meet the paramters. For the Skerton, remember I told you guys about the 50sen trick.

Dear MisterCheah,

Thanks for the info. By the way, how do you control drip duration if not using a Clever dripper? Where to get a clever dripper?

Hi Mistercheah,

I use a Hario V3 dripper. Probably easier to get a Clever dripper.

Thanks.

In Penang, you can find Hario at Parkson Gurney Plaza and some good equipment at 1234 Gurney Plaza too.

Hi Guys and Gals,

Finally made the decision to get a better grinder to do some justice to my espresso machine.

Now, between Isomac Pro Inox, NS Grinta and Ascaso I-Mini, which should I get? I'm leaning towards the Isomac cos I like how compact it is. I'm the only one in the house that drinks espresso, so capacity of the grinder is not so much of a factor.

I do find my cheapo Gaggia Espresso to be quite fickle with fineness of the grind. Grinder will be used mainly for espresso as I have a Zassy for the french press etc.

Help!

As you are looking for an espresso-only grinder you should go for a stepless one to allow easy fine-tuning of grind size. In your list only the Ascaso is stepless.

CLM member Shahrizan posted earlier that he got the Nuova Simonelli MCF ( aka Eureka Mignon ) which is reputed to be better than the Rocky, maybe he can give us a first hand review.

A pretty detailed review ( by an equipment vendor so maybe "discount" a little ) including Eureka Mignon and two closely related Ascaso-s:

For the Skerton, remember I told you guys about the 50sen trick.

So i finally got myself a Skerton. Smiley But i cant figure out how to adjust the grind size. I know about the 50sen thingy but where or how do you adjust it? Is it the nut at the bottom? Looks like one needs a pair of pliers to turn this?

Hopefully this helps, see here:

Updated -> found an even better guide:

See the slideshow:

Refer slide 5 or 8, adjust the gap using the 50sen coin trick from mistercheah/yoon.

Cheers...

Eureka Mignon or the NS MCF, a very fine solidly built grinder. However...

1. Square hopper, there are always some bean stuck in the corners..
2. The orifice for the ground coffee, there's a cross, at fine setting, there's a build up of grounded coffee, I just leave it there since it kinda plug it, so the next grind has no wastage.
3. Mine comes with the doser (not that I need it to, though reduced clumping), doser handle is plastic, solid, but plastic, and the grounds do fly out. I just know where they fly to, so no wastage there.

Great things...

1. GOD DAMN its sexy and well built!
2. Micrometric grind adjustment. NICE! I can just turn it 10 degrees to compensate for a 2 day old coffee in the hopper <-- though I do not do this, but it is possible.
3. Changing setting from espresso to drip is not really a problem..just that you would have to remember how many time you TURNED the adjustment screw. Reversing will get to somewhere close to your original setting.
3. Did I say micrometric stepless adjustment?
4. QUIET! Not that I play with a lot of grinder, but I did have a slight experience with Gaggia & La Cimbali.
5. I can make thick rich, properly pulled espresso using my LOUSY KRUPS (crema enhancer removed) with the grinder. No upgrading the machine..the CFO said NO!

I think that's it..almost a year now, no PROBLEM! Fitting a new red Oscar or Bezerra would do a fine trick to finishing up my setup..but nah..
